LG G5 tease: South Korean tech giant teases new handset to have ‘Always on Display’

The mobile division of LG recently teased a GIF showing that LG G4, the company's upcoming flagshiphandset, will incorporate an "Always on Display" feature. The LG G5 will succeed the company's existing flagship smartphone, LG G4, and will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) scheduled later this month.

The GIF demonstrates a range of smartphones growing dark gradually, following which a silhouette of the LG G5 makes appearance with the date and time of the South Korean tech manufacturer's press conference at MWC 2016, shown on top of a few notification icons. Subsequently, the 'Always On' text appears along with the LG G5 logo, Android Authority reported.

While the "Always On" display may be somewhat familiar, as something similar like Glance View already exists on LG G Flex 2 and even Google and Motorola have introduced the Ambient View and Moto Display on their handsets respectively, the LG G5 is still very different. For instance, the screen of the upcoming LG G5 screen is always on, different from the Moto X or Nexus 6P screens that are only visible intermittently.

Unlike previous LG smatphone models, the LG G5 will not require any motion or gesture to keep the screen display "always on."

In fact, the "Always On" display of LG G5 is a full-screen similar to the second screen of LG V10, and not simply an AMOLED display. In other words, this will offer colors as well as customization similar to the LG V10 second screen, but in this case, it will be a full-screen display.

Since, such backlit LCD screens consume additional battery power, it remains to be seen how LG deals with the issue. Speculations are there that the battery of the upcoming LG G5 will have a lower capacity compared to the LG G4 and, hence, the concern.

There are rumors that the removable battery of the LG G5 will have 2800-mAh capacity compared to the 3000mAh battery present in the LG G4, Venture Beat reported. However, it needs to be noted that while the battery capacity of the LG G5 is expected to be less compared to its predecessor, apparently it will power a relatively smaller display and come with a more proficient processor.
