Realistically speaking, the release date of PlayStation 5 is not going to be any time soon (if Sony will even release PS5), yet many game enthusiasts nevertheless are looking forward and clamoring some news about the next generation PlayStation console. Reports emerged recently that Sony may release its PlayStation 5 secretly this year.
Experts believe that PS5 will be released alongside the PlayStation VR, which is expected to be unveiled later this year and will just serve as an add-on or an accessory to the next gen console. In addition, Sony PS5 will reportedly deliver new technologies and advanced game experience to its users.
According to emerging reports, 2016 will just be a soft launch for PS5, which is speculated to be a special virtual reality cloud gaming super system. The said theory ignited when Sony filed for a glove-based controller patent, wherein it contains plans for a cloud gaming module. The said cloud gaming module connects to a network then to a computer connected to the headset and gloves.
However, an intriguing fact to the filed patent, according to Value Walk, is that it could be a standalone device, which means that users can access games via cloud directly to their headset or gloves, wherein the use of a console to process graphics will be completely removed. With that being said, the VR headset and gloves combo will be a great example of futuristic gaming system that may possibly be integrated to PS5, or may also be PS5's opponent.
Meanwhile, other speculations suggest that PlayStation 5 will not see the light until 2020, and will also be the last non-VR console that will be released in the market.
Other rumors suggest that Sony will not even release its PlayStation 5 anymore. It is said that with the impending release of Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, Sony will unlikely release its next gen console, as it will be a bad move to compete with VR technologies since Virtual Reality is expected to dominate the market this year onwards.
It was reported in 2014 that Devinar Kumar of AMD hinted that PS5 is on its way, but in 2015, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida answered via PlayStation France's Twitter account that PS5 does not exist so there is no future PS5 to talk about.
