A fight between unified middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin and retired former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr could happen, according to GGG's trainer Abel Sanchez.
Sanchez claimed that Mayweather is considering a return to the boxing scene to fight undefeated middleweight champion Golovkin, one of the sport's rising stars.
"He is saying things about a comeback, he just seems to be fixated on Golovkin," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing.
"I've seen three or four pieces in the last couple of weeks where he's talking about beating Golovkin, it looks like he's laying the ground work for something, whether it's Golovkin or somebody else. Floyd's laying the ground works for a comeback."
Mayweather, who hung up his boxing gloves in September last year, has been linked to a potential comeback to give Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao a rematch, whom Pretty Boy defeated in May 2015. But Golovkin seems to be a more intriguing challenge for Mayweather, with the undefeated Kazakh arguably bigger and powerful than any of the opponents the latter fought prior to his retirement.
However, the main concern if a Golovkin vs Mayweather bout happens would be the weight class. Golovkin is dwelling at the middleweight division, while Mayweather mostly fought at the welterweight class.
"I can barely make 147, so how am I gonna fight at 160? Triple G, not being disrespectful, but he's straight up and down, no special effects," Mayweather told Fight Hype. "That's easy work."
While Golovkin mentioned before he is willing to go down at 147 pounds to fight Mayweather, it is unlikely the latter would entertain the former for a bout, considering how dangerous GGG due to his advantage in size and power. But there is no doubt Golovkin has the highest chance of prying out Mayweather from retirement.
Meanwhile, Golovkin will be facing Dominic Wade on Apr. 23 at the Forum in California and is primed for a potential superfight against WBC middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who defends his title against Amir Khan in May.
