Two biggest first person shooter franchises in gaming will take different directions this year. "Battlefield" and "Call of Duty" have new installments coming out later in 2016, with each of the two games happening on opposite ends of the historical spectrum.

Latest reports indicate that the untitled "Battlefield 5" will seemingly take a break from the contemporary settings to allow players explore the under-represented warzones of World War I. The undertaking is definitely fascinating considering that this specific theatre of war has never really been explored in a contemporary AAA-grade first person shooter game.

A major question on the minds of fans is whether EA DICE can translate the past era signature trench warfare into an entertaining and riveting shooter. According to a February report by IGN, "Battlefield 5" could come out on Oct. 26, and therefore, fans should keep their ears on the ground for that date.

Even as "Battlefield" goes back to the past, "Call of Duty" will reportedly take its upcoming installment further into the future. Recent releases such as "Advanced Warfare" and "Black Ops 3" pushed the series into the near future scenario. However, latest information leaks indicate that "Call of Duty 2016" is a true science fiction.

In a recent discussion forum via NEOGAF, reputable industry insider Shinobi said that "Call of Duty 2016" would have space fights and super improved weaponry. This year, series creator Infinity Ward is the studio in charge of the franchise, so it is very likely for fans to be treated with space battle.

The immediate precursor of the upcoming installment, the 2013 "Call of Duty Ghosts," was among the worst received entries in the series. The sequel was hit by lukewarm reviews from not only critics but also fans. There are possibilities that the studio will seek to distance itself from Ghosts by pushing the upcoming installment into a never-before-seen setting.

Fans of the two franchises, "Battlefield" and "Call of Duty," should wait to see what the games' publishing companies have in store for the upcoming installments. Meanwhile, watch the footage below for "Battlefield 5."
