It has long been speculated that Luke Skywalker is Rey's father. However, J.J. Abrams recently squashed these assumptions aside, when he said that Rey's parents were not in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Abrams was at the Tribeca Film Festival to talk about his work on television and film with Chris Rock, when one fan from the audience asked him about Rey's parentage. The director replied, that Rey's parents are not in Episode VII or in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

A video of Abrams' interview is posted on Twitter. In it the director said that he cannot, at this moment, reveal who Rey's parents are. However, Abrams added that knowing who they are is something that Rey thinks about too.

Aside from being Skywalker’s daughter, there have been speculations, that Rey could also be Han Solo and General Leia’s child. But Abrams simply denied all these assumptions during his interview. After all, these three characters appeared in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

However, Abrams backtracked on his statement in a separate interview after the Q&A. He clarified his answer and said Rey does not discover her parents in Episode VII. His clarification could only mean that they were already there in the first place, Rey just did not know it.

"Not that they may not already be in her world," Abrams said according to Entertainment Weekly.

So this brings back the strong theory that Rey could after all be Luke Skywalker's daughter. There were signs from "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" that fuelled this assumption. Luke's lightsaber called out to Rey in the movie. They are also both strong in the Force. Of all the characters in the film, it was Rey who found Luke Skywalker and who handed him back his lightsaber.

"Star Wars: Episode IX" director Colin Trevorrow also hinted in a previous interview, that Rey's parents are mainstay characters in the Star Wars Universe. So fans actually already know them. He said fans will be glad when they learn who Rey's parents are, according to Entertainment Online
