Chris Evert revealed that she's still getting sad everytime Roger Federer loses a match. The American Tennis legend and self-proclaimed Federer fan showed her love to the Swiss no.1 on Twitter following his lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinal round of the Monte Carlo Master.
Evert, who has one more Grand Slam of Federer's 17 majors, couldn't help but show her dismay after seeing Federer's comeback run at Monte Carlo ended in a quarterfinal loss to the Frenchman.
On her Twitter account, she expressed sadness over the Swiss Master's exit while hoping that these setbacks won't prompt him to retire soon.
This isn't the first time Evert showed her sympathy to a losing Federer. Seven years ago, the Hall of Famer said almost the exact words.
"Isn't there something about Federer that pulls at your heartstrings? I cry every time he loses a match, and I don't even know the guy. (Laughs) There's something so endearing about him as a person," [via Go to Tennis]
The Monte Carlo Masters happens to be Federer's first tournament after a knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus forced him to miss roughly two months. Despite the shortcoming, the Swiss stressed that he was happy with the result as he achieved his main goal in the tourney in the first place: to play competitive tennis with elites after a long lay-off.
Meanwhile, Evert also provided encouraging words for Rafael Nadal, especially now that he's apparently staging a comeback run in the European clay-court season.
Nadal's furious third set performance in his final showdown with Gael Monfils impressed Evert that she's starting to believe the Bull of Manacor is gaining the confidence he lost the past 18 months.
Nadal, who bagged his first title of the season in Monte Carlo, is targeting another crown, a record-setting 9th title in Barcelona. On Friday, Rafa finally solved Italy’s Fabio Fognini, beating him 6-2, 7-6 to book his seat in the semis.
