Although rumors previously circulated that Robert Downey Jr. is planning to stop playing Iron Man, fans will be delighted to know that the actor hinted that he is still willing to do at least one more film as Tony Stark after "Captain America: Civil War."
There were talks that "Iron Man 4" may launch with a new actor, Screen Rant has learned. However, there are hints that Marvel is planning to continue extending Downey's contract. First, Iron Man is slated to appear in the upcoming film "Spider-Man: Homecoming," as well as "Avengers: Infinity War," which will arrive in two parts. Second, he confirmed for the first time that he might actually play the billionaire inventor again. Downey also said that he is open to the potential of donning the Iron Man suit once more.
"I feel like I could do one more," the actor said in an interview with ABC News.
It would be difficult for fans to picture a different actor playing Tony Stark, considering that Downey has played the character since 2008. Director Jon Favreau said that he could not contemplate how another actor would portray the character if a fourth standalone movie would happen.
Favreau believed that Downey was the best choice to play Iron Man at the time, even though Marvel initially had doubts due to the actor's past behavioral problems. The director turned out to be right, as Downey made a lasting impression after the first film launched.
Downey has appeared in three solo "Iron Man" movies, as well as three ensemble films, namely "The Avengers," "The Avengers: Age of Ultron," and "Captain America: Civil War." He also appeared after the end-credits of "The Incredible Hulk."
It is still uncertain how Marvel would position a fourth "Iron Man" film, considering its long list of upcoming movies through 2020. However, some films in the schedule tend to be adjusted, so it is still possible that Marvel can make room, depending on fan demand and the existing storyline.
"Captain America: Civil War" will launch on May 6, Friday, in the US. More updates and details are expected soon.
