As rumors about Bruce Jenner's transition become news, transgender issues also come to light.
The first thing to be considered is why Jenner is referred to as a transgender and not a gay man or a homosexual.
As defined by Gay Center, a transgender person is "someone who doesn't fit within society's standards of how a woman or a man is supposed to look or act."
It is also important to note that what Jenner is undergoing is a transition and not a sex change. According to GLAAD Media Guide For Transgender Issues, the process of transition includes "telling one's family, friends, and co-workers" and "using a different name and new pronouns."
Jenner has reportedly told his family already about the transition he is undergoing. Based on GLAAD's standards, the pronoun to be used when referring to transgender people depends on what they would like to use.
However, if it is not possible to ask a transgender person which pronoun is preferred, the correct pronoun to be used is the one that is in accordance with the person's gender expression and appearance.
Thus, if Jenner transitions from dressing like a man to donning female clothing, the Kardashian-Jenner patriarch should then be referred to as "she." In 2014, Jenner also reportedly wanted to be called Bridgette.
Other parts of the transition, according to GLAAD, are hormone therapy and legal changing name and/or sex, as well as optional types of surgery.
It has been reported that Jenner is also going to speak publicly about his transition through an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer.
