AT&T subscribers have reported getting the May security patches for Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. While the carrier has not yet published a changelog nor given an official statement to confirm the information about the latest security update, a quick peek at the handsets' software menu shows that the update is about 40MB for the two devices.
Customers can manually check the incoming update by going to Settings > About Device > Software Update. The two smartphones came out in March and they have been positively received by users worldwide. It is reported that the two devices are Samsung's top selling smartphones in the United States, garnering more than 5.8 percent of the total market share in Q1 2016 alone.
A report published by British consumer research firm, Kantar Worldpanel, indicates that the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are supposed to surpass iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus sales during this quarter. A mobile analyst at the company noted that Samsung's latest flagship appears to be among the "most heavily promoted smartphones ever."
As a recap, the most enticing offers for the Galaxy S7 applied to preorders. Customers who ordered the S7 or S7 Edge by March 18 got a free Gear VR headset in addition to six VR games. Verizon gave a free Gear S2 smartwatch with the two smartphones purchases, while Best Buy bundled the Gear VR, $50 worth VR content, and a 64 GB memory card.
According to a statement from Kantar Worldpanel official website, "The Galaxy S6 was never able to capture the top spot, remaining the second best-selling phone behind the iPhone 6, and then the iPhone 6s."
As people await the official statement from AT&T concerning the complete details of Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge May security patch, Android fans are speculating that the carrier is preparing to release another high-end Samsung smartphone on its network. The latest handset is reportedly Galaxy S7 Active, which is very similar to the S7 Edge in terms of specs, but more rugged.
The Galaxy S7 Active has "tougher polycarbonate construction, rubberized edges and physical buttons instead of the capacitive soft-keys," Forbes noted. The device is also dustproof and waterproof.
