Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea said to have threatened to leave Old Trafford this summer if Louis van Gaal stays as the Red Devils' head coach next season.

Daily Mail Online published the report Tuesday, saying that the 25-year-old Madrid native "is ready to quit" United soon as he had "grown disenchanted with life under the Dutchman, despite signing a new four-year contract at the start of the season".

The report further mentioned that if van Gaal will not be replaced then De Gea will "press to make" the speculated Real Madrid move push through in the summer. De Gea had been a wanted man for Los Blancos for the past several transfer windows and the Spaniard almost joined them last summer if not for the last-minute talk between him and van Gaal.

De Gea and van Gaal had a misunderstanding last summer starting with the team's stint in the International Champions Cup tourney in North America. For a while, the 64-year-old Dutch mentor utilized Sergio Romero as his starting goalkeeper, much to the chagrin of De Gea.

However, a few games into the 2015-2016 season, the two had begun face-to-face discussions regarding their status and they were successful that the 6-foot-4 goal tender went on to sign an extension with United and was brought back to the starting lineup by van Gaal afterward.

Recent rumors have emerged that Real is preparing to make another bid for De Gea this summer to the tune of £40 million, which is the Spaniard's release clause according to his current contract. The La Liga giants will have until June 16 to forward the offer to United or again miss De Gea in a transfer window.

De Gea is one of the best shot stoppers in the English Premier League this season with 15 clean sheets in 34 games for the Red Devils, second only to Arsenal's Petr Cech, Caught Offside noted.

He also led United to a league-best 35 goals allowed this season, tied with third-placed squad Tottenham Hotspur.

De Gea just finished his fifth season for the Old Trafford giants and had appeared in 48 games in all competitions this term. He has a total of 223 appearances for United since he was acquired in the summer of 2011.
