In Season 5 finale, the presidential candidates choose their running mates. While Olivia Pope makes Jake Ballard Mellie Grant's vice-president, Cyrus Beene shocks everyone by declaring himself Jake's rival for the post and Frankie Vargas' running mate.

When "Scandal" Season 6 premieres it is expected to further explore the twist and reveal more about Cyrus' plans. At the same time, the show will reveal how the shocking twist impacts Mellie and Olivia's friendship and the damage it may cause.

According to TV Guide, there is no information where in the timeline "Scandal" Season 6 episode 1 picks up from. "But wherever we come back, if we come back on the campaign trail, it will feel through-the-looking-glass to find out that [Mellie's] in bed with Papa Pope (Joe Morton)," Bellamy Young (Mellie Grant) told the website.

In another interview with Variety, "Scandal" star Scott Foley, who plays the role of Fitz, teased an "interesting storyline" that will play out in Season 6. Meanwhile, Young suggests that it will "really be a bloodbath" if the show comes back to "an election in Season 6."

So how will it change things with Cyrus being Frankie's running mate in Season 6? "I think the dynamic between him and Olivia, as he said in tonight's episode, it's the old guard vs. the new guard. But yeah, you've got Fitz on Mellie's side, you've got Abby and the Gladiators and Rowan pulling for Mellie. Cyrus is on an island by himself at this point. But I think that he really believes in this candidate - he really believes that Frankie Vargas is the best choice and the real deal. It's going to be interesting to see if what Cyrus did to get Frankie to this point [this shooting at the capital] comes out," Foley explained.

Meanwhile, the news is there will be a delay in "Scandal" Season 6 premiere. Due to Kerry Washington's second pregnancy, the sixth season will be shorter. The show has been cut down from 22 to 16 episodes, according to TV Line.

As for the airdate, "Scandal" Season 6 episode 1 is expected to go on air at midseason. However, ABC is yet to confirm the news and reveal the official airdate. Stay tuned for more spoilers and updates.
