The 90-minute premiere of AMC's new show "Preacher" starts off with a man of God blown into pieces after an extra-terrestrial object enters him. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg come together to bring the cult comic book of the same name on television.

Coming back to "Preacher" Season 1, episode 1, Custer returns to his hometown in Texas to fulfil the promise he made to his dad. He will start ministerial duties at his father's church. However, it is not going to be easy to leave his past behind.

In the midst of dealing with Cassidy and Tulip, a strange object enters Custer and he gets superpowers. However, none of the characters would be donning any special costume in the show.

Meanwhile, showrunner Sam Catlin talked to IGN about casting Cooper for the role of Custer.

The showrunner stated that when he watched Cooper in "The Devil's Double," he knew he was a versatile actor.

"He plays Uday Hussein, Saddam Hussein's crazy son, but he also plays Uday Hussein's double that they would have for security, for protection. He plays this really normal guy who's caught up in this crazy world, but then he also plays this charismatic sociopath. That's a lot of what Jesse Custer is," Catlin said.

The showrunner said that Jesse is like one of the Clint Eastwood character in the town.

"Jesse's kind of the Clint Eastwood character in this town, where he's got all these colorful clowns and crazy people all around him, but he's the quiet center of the storm, so it had to be someone who really held the screen and was powerful and had this sort of natural cowboy movie star presence. It was a pretty easy decision, actually. He's fantastic."
