Microsoft has refused to change its Windows 10 policies for the past year, which included required updates with security/non-security features and shorter upgrade deadlines. This has resulted in a small group of Windows users complaining about the policies. The software giant has just tweaked its Windows 10 policy after users of Windows 8 and other older versions of the operation system groused about the malware-like method that caused thousands of customers to accidentally upgrade to the latest OS.
PC World editor Brad Chacos first noticed the changes to the Windows 10 upgrade policies. However, he argued that adding more pop-ups did not make the situation better because it did not make it clear Windows users were rejecting the upgrade.
The tech company's upgrade trick has been compared to websites with malicious software. After visitors click the "X" to close pop-ups, malware is installed on the computer.
The Get Windows X app pushes the OS's update prompt. In the past users could close the pop-up by clicking on the X. However, it now has the opposite effect and informs Microsoft that the Windows user wants to update their computer at the time displayed inside the pop-up. Only manually changing the update time gets rid of the window.
Microsoft's move seems to suggest the company believes there are limits to what customers are willing to allow. It confused many customers about how they could opt out of upgrades.
Microsoft has added another notification. It confirms the exact time of the scheduled upgrade, and gives customers an extra chance to cancel or reschedule it, according to BBC.
Meanwhile, if customers want to give the upgrade a thumbs up for the time scheduled they can click "OK." Another option is to close the notifications.
Windows users decide not to upgrade their OS for different reasons. Some are not happy about Microsoft's upgrade policies, many businesses plan to upgrade in the future, and certain customers do not want the latest version of Windows OS.
Microsoft could take other steps to get people to upgrade to Windows 10 and keep good relationships with consumers. They include free trials, special offers, or future discounts on purchase prices, according to Extreme Tech.
