In a stunning announcement on Feb. 10, Tuesday, Marvel and Sony stated that a deal has been closed that would see Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). New details regarding this deal have been revealed, including plans for a younger Peter Parker / Spider-Man going on adventures in Midtown High School.
Part of the deal that brought Spidey back into the MCU was that Sony would have the final word on who would be cast as Spider-Man. The studio is looking for a much younger actor than "Amazing Spider-Man" star Andrew Garfield, now 31.
Sony wants to bring back the character to high-school, IGN reported. Midtown Highschool was a major setting in the comics. "Amazing Spider-Man" director Marc Webb will also not return for the next installment in the franchise, slated to be released July 28, 2017.
Several stars are being considered to wear Spider-Man's red-and-blues, including "Percy Jackson" star Logan Lerman and "The Maze Runner" lead Dylan O'Brien, Variety reported.
Financial details of the deal have also been reported. Marvel will reportedly not be getting any of the profits from future "Spider-Man" films, while Sony will not partake in any future Marvel Films featuring Spider-Man. Marvel will still retain the merchandising rights to Spider-Man, however.
Marvel parent company Disney also reportedly offered billions to buy back rights to the character.
Sony's Plans are still on for the release of Spider-Man spin-offs "Sinister Six" and "Venom". A female Spidey movie is also reportedly still in the works.
