The rumored Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match will not happen anytime soon after the reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight superstar agreed to a rematch with Nate Diaz. However, reports said the fantasy showdown could still become a reality.

According to Pundit Arena, the Mayweather-McGregor fight could take place in 2017. In fact mixed martial arts coach John Kavanagh, who is training McGregor for his UFC 202 rematch with Diaz, dropped a bomb in a recent interview. He said fans should not be surprised if the two superstars eventually collide in the near future.

"I think that contest will happen eventually, but it's on hold for now," Kavanagh told mmaUNDEGROUND, when asked about the highly-anticipated showdown. "I'd be very surprised if it doesn't, at some stage."

Kavanagh said fans are expressing strong interest in the Mayweather-McGregor boxing match, adding the fight will be an interesting showdown contrary to what most analysts are saying. Mayweather is tipped to dominate McGregor because of his vast experience, but Kavanagh rejected the notion.

Kavanagh admitted Mayweather is unbeatable in a traditional boxing match. However, the veteran trainer is convinced McGregor's unorthodox style will be enough to stop Mayweather on his tracks. He added his prized fighter does not strike like a boxer and is capable of confusing the former boxing world champion.

Mayweather, who owns a 49-0 record with 26 knockouts, has not fought since running away with unanimous decision win over Andre Berto in September last year in Las Vegas, where he also announced his retirement. While he has called it quits, the former boxing pound-for-pound king has been publicly campaigning for the fight against McGregor.

According to BoxingScene, Freddie Roach said during an interview with Inside MMA Mayweather asked him to train McGregor. "Mayweather did come by my gym last week and he asked me to take that job if it's offered to me, because he told me the fight is gonna happen and we're gonna make a lot of money," the Hall of Famer said.

However, Roach sounded uninterested in training McGregor for a boxing match with Mayweather. The 56-year-old boxing coach admitted it could take him three years to get McGregor ready for the fight, but it does not necessarily mean he will have a chance to beat Mayweather.
