Peer-to-peer file sharing software BitTorrent is planning to release its own series of original movies. The new service named "BitTorrent Originals" is the company's way of entering the legitimate entertainment market.
BitTorrent's current project is the company's strategy to lure more advertisers by digging deeper into legal ways of content distribution. This is a historic move for the company best known for handling 35 percent of all internet traffic way back in November 2004.
BitTorrent has signed a deal with Rapid Eye Studios in order to create its own original video content. The contents will be released in the BitTorrent Bundle platform. According to official company statement, they were able to convince 10,000 publishers to join its platform.
BitTorrent chief content officer Matt Mason said, "We're traditionally an engineering and technology company but this partnership with Rapid Eye will help us become a more media-focused company."
Currently, BitTorrent Bundle has a sizeable library of original movies and music mostly from smaller, independent artist and studios. Additionally, the company is also working with high-profile artist and various studios. Most notable of this are Sony Pictures Classics, Madonna and Universal.
English musician Thom Yorke, best known as the front-man of rock band Radiohead, recently released his solo album through the BitTorrent Bundle platform.
It is rather odd for a company like BitTorrent to distribute original contents this way but companies like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon have proved that this platform of distribution could also be successful, according to The Verge.
New contents will be available exclusively in the BitTorrent Bundle platform within 30 to 60 days after that timeline the content will can be released into other distribution platform, according to Tech News World. The report also added that BitTorrent will only take 10 percent of the profit and the rest will be handed down to the original creators.
