Android N is now on Development Preview 4 and testers have reported that the final name and version number of Google's next-generation operating system have been hinted. It's likely that the Nexus 2016 devices will run on Android Nutella or version 7.0 on release date, rumored to be in August.

The next Android jumping from 6.xx to version 7.0 was noted first by ArsTechnica, pointing to a demo mode of the OS preview that showed the numerical switch. However, an updated version of the same report said that the SDK was readjusted back to Android 6.xx, indicating that Google is somehow trolling.

For the curious beta testers, tapping too the Android version deep inside the device settings menu will pull up the Android N logo, which when long-pressed will prompt out the label "". It is hard to imagine that Google will bump off Android 6.xx Marshmallow with Namely McNameface so the unusual labeling could be again part of Google's prank campaign.

What's more believable was the hint just provided by Google senior executive Hiroshi Lockheimer. As the man in charge of Android, it's quite easy to believe the feeds coming from Lockheimer and a tweet he posted the clues are glaring that the sequel to Marshmallow is most likely Android Nutella.

The Android chief allowed the social media world of a peek on the things he has been working on, which include a Google Search on the term Nutella, BGR reported. The tease only fired up the rumors that Nutella is the most candidate to become Google's next Android sweet.

"Android Nutella sounds great, perhaps even better than Android KitKat a few years ago," the report added.

Confirmed label or not, Android Nutella or version 7.0 is set to be finalized by July or August 2016, points to the OS getting a schedule release in the latter month. For Android fans, this would mean the imminent launch of the next Nexus family of devices as the Google mobile OS is likely showcased first with the upcoming stock Android smartphones and tablet.

On release date, the Google Nexus 2016 mobile devices are rumored to unbox in two smartphones models built by HTC and a third version of the Nexus 7 2016 compact tablet. The 7-inch slate is said to be the scaled version of the Nexus 6P, thus made by Huawei with Snapdragon 820 chip and 4GB of RAM jammed inside.
