Denver Broncos superstar Von Miller has not signed a new contract after turning down an initial offer. Recent NFL rumors suggested Miller might eventually look for other options, but the 27-year-old linebacker clarified his stance on the stalled negotiation.
Miller wants a long-term contract and he wants to get it from the Broncos, USA Today reported, citing an interview on Chelsea Handler's Netflix show. Miller told Handler that he cannot see himself leaving the Broncos, not only this summer but for his entire NFL career. All he wants is a long-term commitment from the Broncos.
"I would like a little more stability," Miller told Handler. "I want to be a Bronco forever. And I just want the feeling to be the same from the Broncos."
The Super Bowl 50 Most Valuable Player was missing in action during the entire offseason program after he turned down a six-year deal worth $114.5 million offer from Denver. Miller also made it no secret earlier in the offseason that he does not want to play under the one-year exclusive franchise tender.
Miller felt that the initial offer from Denver is unfair because of the $58 million guaranteed salary. Previous NFL free agents rumors indicated that the former second overall pick has the leverage in the negotiation after the Miami Dolphins gave defensive end Olivier Vernon a $52.5 million guaranteed salary.
Miller and his agents feel they deserve more because Vernon has not made into the Pro Bowl in his first four seasons in the league. On the other hand, Miller is not just a Super Bowl MVP but also a four-time Pro Bowler.
One option for Miller is to sit out the entire 2016 NFL season, but he already clarified that he does not want it to happen. Miller's recent statement could eventually lead to an agreement with the Broncos before July 15.
As for the tumultuous relationship between Miller and Broncos general manager John Elway, it appears the two are willing to ease the tension, 9 News reported. Sources said that Elway and Miller talked to each other during their Super Bowl 50 ring ceremony on Sunday at Sports Authority Field.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe, who was present during the event, said that he does not understand why the two parties cannot reach an agreement. Sharpe voiced out his opinion, saying that he feels Miller deserves what he is asking for.
"He's a four-time Pro Bowler, Defensive Rookie of the Year, Super Bowl MVP," Sharpe said of Miller. "I don't know what else he can do."
