"Battleship Island" arrives sooner or later in the first quarter of 2017. While filming is currently underway for the much-awaited historical period film, the first "Battleship Island" promotional poster was just released.

Starring renowned actors' Song Joong-Ki, So Ji Sub and Hwang Jung-Min, "Battleship Island" is set amid the Japanese colonial period. Inspired by real-life events, the film recounts the concealed story on how Koreans were exploited on Hashima Island during the 1940s and follows roughly 400 Korean people, who risk their lives to escape from the said place.

With its filming officially began June 17 in Cheongju, South Korea, Song's official fan club in Singapore, namely Ki Aile, took to Twitter on June 22, Wednesday and posted the film's first promotional poster.

Although in-depth details of the film remain scarce, earlier reports claimed that the filming site would reportedly use Hollywood style in shooting the motion picture. With director Ryuu Seungwan helming the project, the film's production team recreated Japan's Gunkanjima on a gigantic 6,600-square-meter area, set on the former United States' armed forced based situated in Chuncheon.

Speculations are rife that crew and cast members will continue filming until early November. Nonetheless, singer-actress Lee Jung Hyun, 36, has been cast to take on the role of a sex slave, Mal Yeon, who experienced hardships while aboard the said island, The Kpop Buddy has learned.

The film has already gained much attention from the public for its unique historical premise and star-studded lineup. Hence, an official from CJ E&M hinted on June 12 that the movie will be released on the same date both in South Korea and mainland China in early 2017.

Adding on, Song, 30, recently revealed that he needed to undergo a shocking transformation for his role in the film. Song is poised to portray the member of the North Korean Independence Group, Park Moo Young, who sneak into the 6-hectare island to rescue an individual from the independence group, Yoon Chul, who is the prime minister's favorite, as well.

"These days I'm going on a diet to make (my body shape) fit the character," Song was quoted as saying in a report by Hong Kong newspaper Sing Tao Daily, according to The Kpop Herald.

Song added that he is carrying out a meal plan and currently undergoing additional training sessions, in an effort to appear more masculine and mature. He is also expected to shave his hair bald.
