Recently, it was rumored that Apple is planning to introduce a "Deep Blue" color variant for its upcoming iPhone, giving an impression that the body of the phone will actually look blue. Now it is being speculated that the new color will be much darker than expected.

Japanese blog Mac Otakara recently told AppleInsider that the new color of the upcoming Apple iPhone 7 will actually be a much darker version of the currently available "space gray" option for iPhone 6s series. That is, the phone will be close to black, but not actually black in color.

Previously it was rumored that the tech giant is planning to replace the Space Gray option with Deep Blue color option for its upcoming phone in the iPhone series, according to MacRumors. The new color was expected to stand along with the usual variants - Rose Gold, Gold and Silver.

Space Gray variant was first introduced with the launch of iPhone 5s in 2013. Since then, the lighter version of darker slate black has been introduced in several other Apple products, including 12-inch MacBook, iPad Pro and iPad Air.

Over a period of the last few years, Apple has steadily increased the range of colors in its iPhone line up. While the white and black color option for iPhone 3G were launched back in 2013, the Gold color option was added much later. White color variant was later renamed to "Silver." More recently, the company introduced Rose Gold color variant with its iPhone 6s.

Despite all the new color options, Silver Gray has remained one of the most inconsistent in terms of shade. For example the Space Gray variant for Apple Watch is much darker than the Series 7000 aluminum used for the production of Space Gray iPhone 6s.

Sources who previously claimed that the Cupertino based company is planning to altogether replace the Space Gray variant with deep blue probably mistook the darker version of Space Gray for Deep Blue. Now that the rumor has been cleared, the all new iPhone 7s is expected to release with four color options - Space Gray, Gold, Silver and Rose Gold.

Apple is expected to release iPhone 7s in September 2016, along with iOS 10. The following video talks about the upcoming iPhone 7s:
