The Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X hit the shelves in October last year after they were announced by the tech company on September 29. Google teased either an autumn or fall launch date for the Nexus 2016 smartphones and it is still within that timeline.

The Telegraph reported that Google will release a non-Nexus smartphone this year.

Reports also suggest that the search giant is in talks with manufacturers and mobile operators about launching a Google-branded phone that will extend the Google's move into hardware.

At present, it is not known how the device would differentiate themselves from Nexus devices, or what the handset will be called.

According to reports, Google will be taking greater control over software, manufacturing and design with this smartphone. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, has said that the company will continue to make Nexus devices with partners, disclosing that Google will pay extra attention to them in the future. He further said that the upcoming Nexus devices will not run pure Android anymore.
