Former world No. 1 John McEnroe has offered his services to Rafael Nadal as a new coach to the Spaniard.
McEnroe knows for a fact the greatness of Nadal in playing tennis despite the recent struggles the world No. 4 suffered in the past two seasons. However, McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam winner, believes there is a need for Nadal to hire a new coach that would complete the teachings of long-time coach and uncle Toni.
"Rafa is a great champion and plays with much energy, but it is time to ask if he needs fresh stuff in his team. He needs a new coach," McEnroe told Marca as translated by Tennis World USA.
"He should find external help that would complete what his uncle has already taught him. Like Boris Becker and Novak Djokovic."
Toni has been coaching Rafa since the latter started his illustrious tennis career in 1990. Their partnership has resulted to 14 Grand Slam titles, including a record nine majors at the French Open and recognizable success in the tennis scene.
After a regretful campaign last season, there were speculations about Rafael possibly replacing Toni earlier this year. Even Toni himself acknowledged the chances of him being replaced as Rafa continues his downward trend, which was evident following the 30-year-old's early exit at the Australian Open in January.
While it would be interesting to see what McEnroe could bring if he joins Rafa's team, there seems to be no imminent coaching change in the Spaniard's side, especially after somewhat regaining his form before being sidelined by a left wrist injury. Moreover, Rafa is likely focused in getting back on his game and recovering from his latest setback that forced him to skip the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club in Church Road.
Meanwhile, Toni seems committed in helping his nephew for a strong tennis action comeback, which could happen at the Rogers Cup in Toronto at the end of July. Toni has guaranteed fans that Rafa's recovery is progressing well, giving way to a possible return just in time for the Rio Olympics.
"Rafa is doing well," Toni said, reports the ATP's official website.
"The Federation doctor has said that everything is progressing as it should, in the time frame we expected. The doctor said everything is on the right track."
