Google unveiled this week version 7.0 of its mobile operating system that will be officially known as Android Nougat. As expected, the OS will run first on the Nexus 2016 flagship, the supposed specs of which have also been leaked out. The device release date, however, remains a big question mark.

Following weeks of guessing game with some Android fans even convinced that the next OS version will be called Nutella, Google announced that the sequel to Marshmallow is in fact Android Nougat. A short video clip (can be viewed below) accompanied the revelation that briefly detailed how the new Android name was picked.

And using its Android Twitter account, Google provided a glimpse of the Nougat mascot, which is actually is the official Android statue, only flanked on all sides by Nougat candy bars.

Android Nougat is reported to reach its last developer or beta build by end of July, fueling speculations that the final cut is scheduled to deploy within the month or August. Google, however, has yet to divulge the launch date for the next Android.

The same goes for the next Nexus but leaked specs of the device continue to flow out. The latest came courtesy of Android Police, pointing to unnamed sources as provider of the fresh information.

The tech blog site had earlier shared what it claimed as the specifications for the 5-inch HTC Nexus Sailfish, which painted a more powerful replacement of the LG Nexus 5X of 2015. This time around, the leaked details are all about the Nexus Marlin, also said to be built by HTC.

The device is phablet-size with a 5.5-inch screen that Android Police said will boast of an AMOLED display panel in 2K resolution or 2560 x 1440. Powering the kit is a quad-core Qualcomm processor, which the report did not identify but rumors have it that for the next Nexus flagship Google and HTC have opted for the Snapdragon 823 or the enhanced version of SD 820. Like its Sailfish sibling, Marlin will unbox with 4GB of RAM.

The camera set up is 12MP on rear and 8MP on front and it appears that the Nexus Marlin will unpack in two flavors - 32GB and 128GB editions. As in previous makes, the next Nexus is without a microSD slot.

Below is the balance of the specs shared by Android Police:

  •  USB-C port
  •  Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner
  •  3450mAh battery
  •  Bottom-firing speakers
  •  Bluetooth 4.2

The report did not mention any specifics on the release date but the consensus among Android fans is that the Nexus 2016 will come out at the same time of Android Nougat's arrival, which as stated above should be no later than August 2016.
