The music video's director Floria Sigismondi has shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Rihanna was very open to trying a different and unique look for her mystical character in the video for the "Star Trek" theme song. Sigismondi recounted that the "Work" crooner was very receptive to having tattoos painted on her face, as well as getting her eyebrows shaved. The director even described the singer as an amazing artist and applauded her for her ability to transform into her music video character.

Sigismondi explained that Rihanna's said ability is a trait that many directors have always dreamt of. The music video maker also applauded the singer for the way she was able to use her hands and body to create a language of her own. The director also gushed over Rihanna's hands and the way she moved in the music clip during an interview with Vanity Fair. She shared that the singer was amazing to watch given her beautiful hands and movements.

The music video for the "Star Trek" theme song was the first time that Sigismondi worked with the Barbadian songstress. In describing the concept for the clip, she mentioned that they wanted to create an otherworldly world that contained nuances of the beloved space adventure series. The video even featured a shot of the iconic U.S.S. Enterprise in space.
