Fresh from the axed Fox's legal comedy television series "The Grinder," which only aired for one season, Lowe instantly landed the role in "Code Black" Season 2 opposite Marcia Gay Harden, TV Line reported. The series got cancelled despite Lowe's nomination in the Golden Globe.

Lowe is not new in playing a medical doctor role as he once starred in the 2004 CBS series' "Dr. Vegas." The actor will be seen alongside  "Heroes" alum Noah Gray-Cabey, "Flesh and Bone" star Emily Tyra and "One Life to Live" alum Nafessa Williams in major recurring roles.

The news came after CBS recently removed series' regulars Christa (Bonnie Somerville) and Neal (Raza Jaffrey) as part of the its restructuring for "Code Black" Season 2, according to Deadline. Two returning cast Boris Kodjoe and Jillian Murray will be promoted to regular.

"The concept of the show is for each season to begin on the first day for incoming freshman residents, just as in real life there is a cycle of residents coming in and residents either graduating or moving on," "Code Black" creator and executive producer Michael Seitzman told the publication.

"Bonnie Somerville and Raza Jaffrey are beloved by the audience, as well as the rest of the cast and crew," Seitzman added. "Their departure is painful for us, is no reflection on the extraordinary work they both did on the show."

Ben Hollingsworth, who portrays the role of Dr. Mario Savetti, expressed his excitement on Twitter as Lowe joins the series' upcoming season. "Code Black" Season 2 will premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 10/9c.

Lowe has been part of series "Parks and Recreation," "The West Wing and Brothers & Sisters," and "You, Me and The Apocalypse." His latest series "The Grinder" saw the actor portraying the role of Dean Sanderson Jr. , a TV actor who returns home in Idaho to take another job after his show was all of a sudden cancelled.
