Valve is set to launch the new Meet Your Match update that will be introducing the much needed competitive play for the Team Fortress 2 title which has been around for years.

Almost all multiplayer online shooter games have competitive modes. Blizzard's Overwatch also recently introduced Competitive play which left Team Fortress 2 players asking when they will be getting a similar update too.

Team Fortress 2 was born out of the mod from the original Half-Life video game which was also born out of a Quake mod. Valve used their own updated Source Engine that was also used in the popular Half-Life 2 title which hasn't been followed yet by Half-Life 3.

Valve said that the Team Fortress 2 Meet Your Match update will introduce the six-on-six competitive game play with support for all weapons and all classes, Polygon has learned. There will be 18 ranks to progress through with the first one named "Fresh Meat" and the last level being the "Death Merchant."

Quickplay matchmaking has also been revamped as players will now be matched with other players of the same skill. Currently, players entering quickplay are just randomly dropped off onto the nearest possible server without any consideration to their skills and game history.

Players who are interested in the Meet Your Match update from Valve will be glad to know that they will need a Team Fortress 2 premium account status, Kotaku reported. Those who have bought the game when it was still not free and those who have bought something from the Mann Co store automatically has the premium account status.

For those who are looking to play the new game mode, they could also purchase a discounted $10 Competitive Access Pass now. The full price for the pass has not yet been revealed by Valve.

To be fair, Valve has been planning for a competitive mode for TF2 since last year. There were many delays but the new Overwatch game could have pushed their development to overdrive.

Valve has not announced when the Meet Your Match update for Team Fortress 2 will be rolled out. More details are expected to be revealed tomorrow on their official website.
