The critics and audiences have criticized the hallucination sequence in "The Secret Life of Pets" despite the scene being extensively funny and entertaining.
Entertainment Weekly reported that directors Yarrow Cheney and Chris Renaud have been held responsible for the scene, which has doubled their trouble. The controversy surrounding the scene has made the directors answerable to people who need a justification that made them put such an illogical sequence in the movie.
With a huge box office collection of around $102.3 million, the movie has become one of the most entertaining animated comedy movies. It has grabbed the number one spot over the weekend and seems to consistently maintain the position.
In the scene, character Duke played by Eric Stonestreet and Max played by Louis C.K. are found running unconsciously in a sausage factory. They reach a sausage fest, which is something unique as dogs don't really get such chances in life. As soon as the two characters indulge into the fest, they get hallucinated. They are taken to yet another world where they enjoy a musical sequence from the popular "Grease" tunes.
It is one of the scenes that have entertained people the most, helping the movie climb up to the number one position while it is only this scene being criticized as well. Renaud said earlier that while incorporating the scene in "The Secret Life of Pets," he thought of Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a Place on Earth."
"It was written as Max and Duke gorging themselves, and I thought that maybe it should induce... have you ever heard the term 'meat drunk?'" Renaud asked. "Say a lion has eaten too much - it makes them sleepy. So I was thinking, what if the meat induces a hallucination for them?"
The director added that a staff member from Universal Music suggested putting "We Go Together" from "Grease." Renaud said that he found the suggestion good and hence he put the sequence with the song for fun and entertainment. He confirmed that the team re-recorded the song where the sausages sang it alongside the original singers from the film.
According to Cinema Blend, if "The Secret Life of Pets" remains consistent in terms of box office collection, it will be the third Pixar movie to become the top-grossing flick of the year after "Toy Story" released in 115 and "Toy Story 3" in 2010.
