After keeping fans on tenterhooks for seasons, the 'Game of Thrones' season 6 finale came clear on the R+L=J theory. As Bran Stark time traveled in the past along with his father Ned Stark, all of the fans saw what happened inside the Tower of Joy.

As a dying Lyanna Stark handed over her baby to her brother Ned and whispered in his ears to protect him from Robert Baratheon, it became clear that the newborn baby was Jon Snow. It was confirmed that he was the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and not the bastard of Ned, as he had been portrayed to the world. However, Lyanna and Ned are dead, only Bran or at best Howland Reed (if he is alive) knows of Jon's true parentage.

If Reddit user Sakhnini's theory is to be believed, another person also knew this truth. According to her, Maester Aemon Taragaryen, the great-uncle of Rhaegar, was aware of Jon's real identity and even hinted at it during season 1 in the ninth episode. According to Time, while counseling Jon, he talked about love, honor and duty and in his sermon lay hidden the R+L=J theory that has intrigued fans for years.

When Aemon advised Jon about what he should do when he learns about Ned's imprisonment in the King's Landing, he was indirectly hinted at what Ned did for him to save him. He hinted that his supposed father chose love over duty for the sake of his sister and her child. As he philosophized about the futility of duty in comparison to the feel of a newborn son in one's arms, he was referring to the Tower of Joy scene that Bran and the audience saw in the finale.

Well, Sakhnini has indeed a point and her juxtaposition of Aemon's dialogues and the Tower of Joy scene are quite convincing. As a fan, you have got to take a look at it to realize its veracity.
