Mechanical hard drives are still not out of fashion despite the recent surge in popularity of solid-state drives (SSD) as the latter is still expensive. They may be fast but the larger storage capacity variants cost too much for the average builder or even for a server setup.

The new Seagate Guardian series also includes the new Barracuda Pro desktop drive for consumer grade builds, Computerworld has learned. Seagate also has a new SkyHawk variant specially designed for video surveillance systems that record every moment on cameras for viewing if there are any suspicious activities.

BarraCuda drives offer several options for desktop and laptops with their 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors. Seagate's new BarraCuda Pro drives offer more storage up to 10TB with a workload rating of up to 180TB per year which is more than enough for the average PC user or even gamer.

Seagate also has their new FireCuda drive which is designed for high-performance gaming and video editing desktops. The hybrid hard drive is claimed to be up to five times faster than the mechanical HDD but still has more capacity than the modern SSDs at up to 2TB in storage choices.

IronWolf hard drives also have models that reach up to 10TB and it could be used for 24 hours a day and seven days a week, Extremetech reported. It also has a workload rating of up to 180TB per year and has RAID support plus a data rescue plan option from Seagate.

Despite the new hard drive line from Seagate, the company is still expected to layoff several thousands of people over the next year. They will reportedly cut 14 percent of their global workforce as the mechanical hard drive market shrinks down thanks to the advancements in SSDs.
