Although there is no photo presented, the claims were widely circulated on Twitter.

While details about the film remain scarce, it was learned that "Battleship Island" has been shooting completely under the radar. The filming began on June 17 in Cheonju, Chungcheong Province and is expected to take six-seven months before it wraps up.

"I'm happy that the first take went as smoothly as possible," director Ryoo told HanCinema. "The filming will be tough as it progresses. I believe we will do a great job."

Much to the delight of many, the film's production team recreated Japan's Hashima Island (aka Gunkanjima) on an enormous 6,600-square-meter area filming set.

Set in the midst of the Japanese colonial era, "Battleship Island" recounts the concealed story of more than 400 Korean laborers who were forced to work in undersea coal mines under the brutal treatments of the Japanese soldiers. Along with the help of Korean independence fighters, the Korean laborers stage a daring escape from the 6.3-hectare island lying in the southern part of Japan's sea.

"Battleship Island" has drawn significant interest from the public in light of its unique plot and ensemble cast. Apart from Song and So, the upcoming film also stars Hwang Jung Min as Lee Kang Ok, Lee Jeong Hyeon as Mal Nyeon and child actress Kim Soo-Ahn as So Hee.

"Whether it's Captain Yoo Si-jin or an Independence Army soldier, I want to enjoy the strength that the work and the screenplay carry," Song told Marie Claire Korea, as cited by SongJoongKi_SG. "I believe in Hwang Jung Min, So Ji Sub and Lee Jong Hyun. I think it will be very enjoyable and will definitely be inspiring each other with our infinite potentials."

CJ Entertainment will handle "Battleship Island's" distribution in cinemas across South Korea and mainland China in early 2017. Check out the video below for more information:
