There is a high possibility that fans could see "True Detective" Season 3 after Nic Pizzolatto's critically acclaimed TV series ended its run on HBO.  The creator is still under negotiation, but an HBO executive teased that Season 3 is likely to happen.

"True Detective" Season 1 featuring Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, and Michelle Monaghan was a huge hit. However, Season 2 received a lukewarm reception both to fans and critics.  Pizzolatto is managing other things at the moment, but he is presently under negotiations with HBO for a probable "True Detective" Season 3.

"It's not dead," Deadline quoted HBO head of programming Casey Bloys as saying at the Television Critics Association's press tour in Beverly Hills on July 30, Saturday. "We are hoping for a third season. It's a very valuable franchise for us.

HBO and Pizzolatto are both positive for a season renewal of the crime franchise.  However, since Pizzolatto is currently doing other projects, "True Detective" Season 3 may be written by another writer with the creator's supervision.

"True Detective" Season 1 which was first seen in 2014 received several Emmy nominations. However, Season 2 that featured new cast and a new plot was a big flop, putting the pop culture sensation into limbo.

Apart from Bloys, one of the initial cast members, McConaughey also expressed his wish to see "True Detective" Season 3 in the small screens.  In an interview with the "Rich Eisen Show," he admitted how he missed playing the role of Rust Cohle.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man," McConaughey told the host of "Rich Eisen Show. "I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching 'True Detective' on Sunday nights."

HBO has not yet closed its doors for a possible "True Detective" Season 3 despite finishing Season 2 for almost a year. In fact, HBO and the showrunner had signed a deal for another season last fall, Screen Rant reported.

As to whether there would be Season 3, fans still have to wait for HBO's announcement. Bloys also confirmed at the TCA that HBO's mega hit "Game of Thrones" Season 8 will be the show's last.
