HBO has announced that the eighth season of "Game of Thrones" will be the end of the fantasy drama.
Following showrunners' David Benioff and Dan Weiss' indication of the fiction show coming to an end, the channel's programming president has also seconded the plans. HBO's Casey Bloys confirmed that the team is planning to wrap the show up with the eighth season of "Game of Thrones."
At the Television Critics Association's press tour on Saturday, Blows said that the channel would not seek any extension of the show. "Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do," Entertainment Weekly quoted Bloys as saying on Saturday. "Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more. I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show."
Benioff and Weiss claimed earlier that there were only 15 episodes or so left to be covered. The duo also said that either seventh or eighth season will end up having only five to six episodes. To this, Bloys said that the number of episodes to air was not yet final.
BGR understood that the fans would be disappointed with the end of "Game of Thrones" coming closer. When asked whether the franchise of the popular fiction will be in operation after the end of the series, Bloys said the issue was under discussion. He said he was not against it but whatever product would be introduced must make creative sense. He, though, added that there were no concrete plans regarding the same yet.
While talking to the media outlet, the HBO president said that the seventh season of the fiction show has already been delayed. As a result, the show would not get any nomination in the Emmys 2017. He also revealed that heavy winter locations would be required for the shooting of the seventh season.
Bloys praised the show for grabbing 23 nominations in the Emmys 2016 and said that even if they were not nominated next time, they would "still have more than anyone else."
"Game of Thrones" season 8 will be final series.
