The Golden State Warriors is still Stephen Curry's team despite adding Kevin Durant this offseason. If everything does not work, Curry can become a free agent next season and the latest rumors imply that the San Antonio Spurs are ready to sign the back-to-back MVP.
In a recent episode of Bleacher Report Radio, Ric Bucher revealed that the arrival of Durant in Golden State could push away Curry. And if that happens, he pointed out the Spurs as a possible suitor for the 28-year-old sharpshooter.
"I think the Spurs are looking at the fact that Kevin Durant came into Golden State and that Kevin Durant may take up some of the superstar space that was previously occupied by Steph Curry... and when Steph Curry becomes a free agent, I think they are going to go hard at Steph Curry," Bucher said.
Of course, this was just an opinion of an NBA analyst but it is possible that Curry and Durant might not work well together. If that happens and they cannot win the NBA title, both Curry and Durant can become free agents next season.
The Warriors are built to withstand the arrival of Durant, adding him to a roster that already has Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala. The front office has surrounded them with a great supporting cast but head coach Steve Kerr will not let them tire out by chasing records.
On the other hand, the Spurs were linked with Durant this offseason but it never materialized. They were also rumored to be targeting Russell Westbrook but he recently renegotiated his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder and he will not be a free agent until 2018.
San Antonio can turn its attention to next summer when Durant and Curry are the top two players. However, the 2014 MVP has stated that he is not looking forward to entering free agency which means the 2015 and 2016 MVP will likely test the market.
Nevertheless, this will only happen if the Warriors implode and they do not win the NBA championship. The Spurs are their only legitimate competition in the West while the Cleveland Cavaliers are still the team to beat.
In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, LeBron James mentioned that his new motivation is to become the greatest of all time. For that to happen, The King has to overcome the Warriors' "superteam" next season.
