Although major details like air date and storyline remain unknown for the next season of "Vampire Diaries," series creator Julie Plec confirmed Nina Dobrev will be returning to the show. The showrunner did not reveal whether the actress would portray Katherine or Elena but rumors are rife Elena would be waking up from slumber to reunite with Damon.

Aside from Dobrev, Plec confirmed the return of other characters for the upcoming installment. In addition to Katherine/Elena, characters scheduled for a comeback include Sarah, Lexi, Klaus and Grams.

The return of Lexi may be possible as she had been resurrected in the series for quite a couple of times. Before being killed the past season, she appeared in seven episodes and a reappearance this season may not be impossible for her character.

Meanwhile, in a previous interview with TV Line, Sarah Salvatore actress Tristin Mays confirmed her character would be making a comeback in season 8. Despite the revelation, her role is still unknown as of the time being. Some are speculating she may be the key to convincing Damon back to darkness, given that she is his only living relative.

In the case of Klaus, the said character is also rumored for a comeback since Plec confirmed a wedding between Stefan and Caroline is happening, Pop Sugar reported. Given the upcoming event, there had been hints Klaus will be appearing during the wedding and Caroline will be choosing him instead of his husband-to-be.

The last from the list is Grams who is speculated to be returning because of Bonnie's need for help. It can be recalled that Bonnie's powers were gone in the past season, and she could only save Enzo and Damon from the wicked demon by calling on one of her dead family members.

The list is just part of the on-going speculations for season 8. Readers are advised to take everything with a pinch of salt since not all of the information stated are confirmed to happen. Season 8 of "The Vampire Diaries" will be the last of the series.
