Because of the repeated droughts that hit Yunnan Province in China, the Kunming Health Vocational College gave each college student a specific water allocation for flushing the toilet.

Monthly, a 3,000-liter allowance is given through preloaded cards that are swiped when using the loo. For students who exceed their monthly allocation, they would have to pay the college an extra amount, reported the Chuncheng Evening News.

A teacher at the college urged the school to give an allocation more than sufficient for the student’s daily use. The idea elicited a lot of comments on Weibo, China’s microblogging site, reported Global Times.

Some netizens found the idea of using preloaded cards just to flush the toilet a waste of money. Others agreed with the idea because of the water shortage that had hit Yunnan and could worsen in the next 20 years, BBC reported.

However, in case a student has used his or her monthly water allocation, the student has no extra funds and the month is not yet over, some netizens pointed out it could create a smelly problem for the school.
