Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio could emerge as a possible trade target for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are looking to retool in hopes of repeating as champions this season.

The Cavs are facing uncertainty in their backcourt, with Mo Williams hinting retirement and JR Smith yet to finalize a contract with the defending champs. While Kyrie Irving is still expected to step up and carry some of the workload for the Cavs, many rumors have suggested it may be ideal for Cleveland to explore trading for a point guard.

According to Jamyson Frierson of Hoops Hype, Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio would be a "perfect" option for the Cavs.

"Ricky Rubio would be the perfect complement to Irving and fit for the Cavaliers," Fierson wrote via Cavs Nation. "With Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn as the future at point guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Rubio is likely an available asset. He's mentioned in the past how he's wanted out of Minnesota and to play in a bigger market."

"Rubio would finally have a chance to play for a championship if he were traded to the Cavs. His overall scoring is still a work in progress, but his passing ability is close to being elite."

Speculations about Rubio's future with the Timberwolves became rampant after Minny selected Kris Dunn as fifth overall in this year's NBA rookie draft. With Zach Lavine also expected to play major minutes at the point guard position and Tyus Jones also in line for some playing time, the Wolves suddenly find themselves with a crowded backcourt, with Rubio as the likely odd man out.

Rubio, who averaged 10.1 points and 8.6 assists per game last season, would give the Cavs a pass-first point guard, allowing Irving and LeBron James to focus more on the offensive end. Rubio would also get a chance to play for a championship team and reach the playoffs for the first time in his five-year career in the league.

According to Brad Sullivan of Cavs Nation, the Cavs would have to unload Iman Shumpert and Mo Williams, plus a future draft pick, to make room for Rubio, although dealing Shumpert would leave the Cavs with a gaping hole if ever Smith decides to leave Cleveland.

It remains to be seen whether the Cavs have a genuine interest in acquiring Rubio, but if they do, it would be difficult for them to make a move, with teams like the Kings and Spurs also touted possible options for the Spanish playmaker.
