Schalke, who finished fifth in the Bundesliga standings last season to qualify to this term's Europa League, opened their season with a sorry 0-1 loss to 10-man squad Eintracht Frankfurt on the road at the Commerzbank Arena on Aug. 27, Vavel reported.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl's squad failed to score in the whole 90 minutes against lowly team Die Adler, who was almost relegated to 2. Bundesliga last term.

The lone goal of the match was netted by Frankfurt team captain Alex Meier at the 13th minute in the first half. The hosts had a one-man disadvantage late in the game when Jamaican defender Michael Hector was shown a red card at the 79th minute after he fouled Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Schalke failed to capitalize, though, as their attacks were successfully fended off by the Eagles.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich began their title defense this season in spectacular fashion, annihilating last season's 13th-place finishers Werder Bremen, 6-0, at their home stadium of Allianz Arena on Aug. 26, as per SkySports.

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who led the league in goalscoring last term with 30 goals in 32 appearances, again spearheaded new head coach Carlo Ancelotti's attack. The 28-year-old forward unleashed a hat trick at the 13th, 46th, and 77th minutes to show that he is still the top scoring threat in Germany this season.

Other goal scorers for the Bavarians were midfielder Xabi Alonso, team captain Philipp Lahm, and winger Franck Ribery at the ninth, 66th, and 73rd minutes respectively.

Der FCB is projected to pull off another crushing victory over Schalke in this match.
