Shan Jixiang, the curator of the Palace Museum, said, "These new routes will increase the touring area, as well as bring changes to exhibition layouts."

Shan said that the exhibit will change the layout in the change in the next four years. The royal ice house and the imperial hospital will open at the end of the year.

More details about royal life will be featured in the Yongshou Palace where the herbal medicines and food will be on display. The palace is one of the concubines' palaces.

Toys used by the imperial family will also be on display. Royal cooking utensils will be part of the kitchen's exhibit.

More sections of the Forbidden City will be opened. By the end of 2016, 76 percent of the city will be available for viewing.

In June, the museum curator said that all modern structures in the city will be dismantled.

"The Palace Museum is spending the next three years making sure the Forbidden City has only ancient architecture, without a single building of modern construction to affect its ambience," said Shan.

The Forbidden City was constructed from 1406 to 1420 and consists of 980 buildings. The city covers 72 hectares. The palace complex uses traditional Chinese architecture and has influenced cultural and architectural schools of thought in East Asia and elsewhere.

It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
