For the 24th consecutive year the most popular dog breed in the United States is the Labrador Retriever. This is according to the Most Popular Dogs in the U.S. list from the American Kennel Club.
President Gina DiNardo stated that the Labrador breed is "America's dog," according to Yahoo. The other top five breeds on the list include German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Bulldogs, and Beagles, respectively.
Earlier this month at the Westminster Kennel Club Show, a Beagle from British Columbia, Canada also made headlines. It won the "Best in Show" honor at the event.
The dog breeds ranked six to ten include Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle, Poodle, French Bulldog, and Rottweiler, respectively.
The AKA's list of top dog breeds is determined from registrations with the club. Rankings are based on the number of registrations for each breed.
The Westminister Kennel Club Show is a friendly contest. That is apparent in the AKC announcing the list at the luxurious Madison Avenue headquarters in New York City.
The Labrador Retriever's top rank streak of 24 years is the longest in the history of the AKC. Also, for the first time in almost a century the French bulldog rose to the top 10 breeds.
The Bulldog moved up one spot this year, from number five. According to the AKC, this is due to factors such as the breed being child-friendly, and a low maintenance coat.
Other breeds were not in the top 10, but made huge leaps. In a decade the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon has made the biggest leap, from 112th to 74th (2013), according to USA Today.
