The details on why no Avenger was killed during the "Captain America: Civil War" movie were revealed recently by the Marvel president and its directors. They also revealed several other intriguing hints during the event.
Marvel president Kevin Feige and directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained the reason for the low death toll, Hit Fix quoted them as saying during a Q&A that followed a screening of the movie in Hollywood on Friday. The audience member who asked them the question was curious about the reason.
Joe said that they did talk about how they were going to kill Captain America in this movie. Anthony revealed that they talk about every possible scenario over and over again for many months. This scenario did not make its way into a realistic outline, he said.
Feige explained that the ending was more about breaking the team apart completely before getting into the next phase. The next one would be the two part movie "Avengers: Infinity War."
Joe revealed that they talked about lots of potential characters dying at the end of the movie. This never happened because they thought it would undercut the main tension of the movie.
This tension was all about two sides fighting each other and if somebody dies, it would create empathy, Joe said. This could change and it could allow repair for relationships, which they did not want to happen yet.
Feige said that they thought that what had happened to Rhodey in the film would be enough to make the audience depressed. The comic book story was about a big battle of many Marvel characters and in the middle of it, one character died. They talked about doing the same situation, but they ultimately used Rhodey's incident.
Anthony pointed out that the tragedy was that the family falls apart, which he meant was the Avengers team. They did not want the team to fall apart first and then somebody dies afterwards.
There were several interesting tidbits that the panel revealed during the event. Feige explained the back-to-back cameos by Stan Lee, which were recently shot in Atlanta.
Feige revealed that these cameos were for four upcoming Marvel movies, and each cameo was awesome and unique. He praised Lee for his enthusiasm for his role as a cameo.
The movie's editor Jeffrey Ford revealed the amount of footage they shot for the film. He said that if they watched everything they shot, they would be watching it for 21 days straight.
Writer Carly Lane wrote on The Mary Sue that climax part of the film was the revelation of how Tony Stark's parents really died. This revelation starts the climactic battle between Captain America and Iron Man. This also made them realize that the dividing lines have been drawn at that moment.
