The nonprofit organization VideoLAN, developer of the VLC media player, released a major roll-out in order to update its open source media play. The new update was released on Feb. 27, Friday.

According to VideoLAN, the new update has tons of upgrades for its flagship software. The update will be Version 2.2.0 for desktop computers and was given a codename "WeatherWax." The company added that the new update is already out for download for different platforms like Windows, Linux and Mac.

One of the features added to the update is the ability to automatically rotate vertical videos, especially those taken by mobile phones. The latest update also adds additional support for UHD codecs and adds additional integrated compatibility for a variety of codecs. Another added feature was in-app extension downloader for desktop and a newly developed hardware accelerator mechanism for some platform

The VideoLAN media player made its biggest impact on the desktop platform, however the new update also give the player upgrades from all platforms including mobile. VideoLAN media player is now available on Android TV, Windows RT and Windows Phone, according to The Verge.

 According to PCMag, this is the first time the organization simultaneously rolled out a massive update across different platforms.

VideoLAN said in its official statement, "Those releases are the results of more than one year of volunteer work, add numerous new features, fix more than one thousand bugs and improves the scope of the formats supported. The releases on all the platforms share the same core to support video and audio formats."
