"Mafia 3's" setting could give its crime story interesting content and it shows promise. Reviewers will not get a pre-release copy of the video game this time around.
Writer Chloi Rad wrote on IGN that when the first trailer came out, she knew that this was a game that she had to keep an eye on. It was the latest in the "Mafia" game franchise. Another reason was that Hanger 13 went in the direction of a reimagined 1968 New Orleans.
Games should be set more in real places or at fictionalized versions of the real ones. Most video games nowadays seem unusually afraid of using locations of reality. Some games set in a fantasy world are not bad, but there should be more of it set in real places.
A lot of media take inspiration from reality in terms of the world and history, but some games tend to go to fictional ones. A lot of military shooters, sims, strategy games, and a lot of Rockstar video games try to embrace real locations. Chloi said that they should not be afraid to go in another direction so that they can draw out more inspiration.
Chloi wrote that using video games is a great method of exploring important times and places in history. Even if the stories are all made-up, certain references could definitely educate the player. "Metal Gear Solid" made some references in very real historical and political stories, which made it more interesting and popular.
"Mafia 3's" Vietnam War-era American South setting can produce a lot of ideas for gameplay and story content. During 1968, a lot of important historical events happened, which made a difference for the country. This era was the turning point and the Viet Cong's Tet Offensive campaign was one of the bloodiest events in history.
Chloi said that a crime story that has the racial tensions of America at the height of the Civil Rights Movement is a great setting for a game. New Orleans is also interesting for its multi-culturism and famous for its dark history of discrimination. She hopes that this will tell a great story and produce great gameplay.
In other "Mafia 3" related news, 2K has declined the request for a pre-release copy of the game for a review. Writer Dan Stapleton wrote on another post of IGN that the game company does not intend to provide any advance review copies to anyone. Review copies are submitted voluntarily and it is a choice of the publisher to do so.
