Andy Murray hopes to continue his strong showing at the Shanghai Masters 2016 when he faces David Goffin in the quarterfinal round of the ATP 1000 Masters event.
Murray played another solid match as he cruised past Frenchman Lucas Pouille in their third round clash at the Shanghai Masters. The world No. 2 took advantage of Pouille's inexperience, finishing off the match that only lasted for 78 minutes with a 6-1 6-3 victory.
"The start of the match was pretty tight," Murray said, reports the ATP's official website. "It was a long first two games and I managed to get through them and was up a break. It was a good start from both of us. Then maybe he started rushing a little bit in the next couple of games, and the first set was pretty much gone."
The second seed Murray, a two-time former champion at the event, now moves to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters, where he meets Goffin, who is looking to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour in London next month. The 25-year-old Belgian needed three sets to upset sixth seed Gael Monfils, 4-6 6-4 6-2.
"It wasn't easy, I needed some time to get used to the surface, which was faster than Centre Court," Goffin said. "It wasn't easy to find my rhythm. I began to hit my forehand really well today. I haven't thought about Murray yet, but I will try to raise my level again and enjoy the moment. I have nothing to lose. It won't be easy."
Murray has never lost to Goffin, with the Scot leading by 4-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head matchup. Their most recent outing was at the Italian Open earlier this year, where Murray defeated Goffin in the QF round. The winner will get to face either American Jock Sock or French Gilles Simon in the semifinal round.
Sock, who ranks No. 25 in the world, stunned Canada's Milos Raonic with a three-setter win 0-6 6-4 7-6(8), while Simon also staged an upset of his own after beating world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka 6-4 6-4 in their third round clash.
Sock and Simon are set for an intriguing matchup, with both players tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head career singles matchup. Sock won their last meeting last year at the Stockholm Open, defeating Simon in a tightly-contested quarterfinal showdown.
