The creators of the "Fifty Shades Darker" movie have come up with an even more exciting way to present Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey's loves story. Fusing cinema with technology, the upcoming sequel will reportedly use virtual reality technology to bring the romance to life.
Director James Foley confirmed that virtual reality technology is being used to promote "Fifty Shades Darker," which led him to the idea of using the same technology in filmmaking.
"Yeah, there's marketing materials for behind-the scenes [of Fifty Shades Darker], where after we finished shooting for the day, the actors would stay over and VR people would re-create a facsimile of the scene," Deadline quoted Foley as saying.
Foley added that he believes cinema is going to move to VR in the future as it is the "extension of the visual language." "This all needs to be reinvented," Foley said about the transition from traditional filmmaking and the more digital platform.
Further specifics of the project, however, were not revealed. Until then, fans can only speculate how excited it would be to interact with Anastasia and Christian through virtual reality.
In the meantime, Foley is also attached to direct the third movie in the franchise, "Fifty Shades Freed," wherein lead stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will be reprising their roles.
The official "Fifty Shades Darker" trailer was released in September this year, and has since surpassed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" as the most-viewed trailer. The trailer scored 114 million views within 24 hours of its release.
The trailer also shows new characters, including Kim Basinger's Elena Lincoln and Bella Heathcote's Leila - both of whom are ex-lovers to Dornan's Christian Grey. These exes appear to pose a threat on Anastasia's life, particularly Leila who, in the books, was known to have suffered mental breakdowns.
In addition to Basinger and Heathcote, joining the cast of "Fifty Shades Darker" are Eric Johnson, Hugh Dancy and Tyler Hoechlin, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.
Universal chairman Donna Langley has described the sequel as "more of a thriller" compared to "Fifty Shades of Grey."
"Fifty Shades Darker" is set to premiere in theaters on Feb. 10, 2017.
