Taylor Swift was recently named as Forbes' top-earning female musician in the world. With total earnings of $170 million, Swift has surpassed Adele's earning to more than double, with the British singer coming second at $80 million.

"Taylor has completely overtaken everyone on our list due to the phenomenal success of her 1989 World Tour," said Forbes' media and entertainment editor Zack O'Malley Greenburg.

"She played nearly twice as many dates as competitors like Adele and Rihanna during our scoring period, and managed to fill stadiums - the largest type of building one can play - throughout lucrative North American markets and beyond," he added.

Most of Swift's earnings came from her 1989 World Tour, which earned more than $250 million -- $200 million of which coming from the U.S. alone, Forbes reported. Other earnings came from endorsement deals with big brands such as Apple, Keds and Diet Coke.

Forbes' sources included Pollstar, the Recording Industry Association of America, Nielsen Soundscan, and interviews with the musicians' lawyers and managers. The figures are based on their pre-tax income from June 2015 to 2016, Reuters reported.

Just like Swift, most musicians get their bulk earnings from their world tours, except for Adele whose majority of earnings came from album sales. The British singer's latest album, "25", was a huge hit in the U.S. and in many parts of the world.

Coming in third is Madonna, who earned a total of $76.5 million. She was the highest paid female musician in 2013, grossing $170 million for her "Rebel Heart" tour.

Madonna is followed closely by Rihanna at $75 million who was given a lifetime achievement award during the MTV Video Music Awards in August. 2014's top earner, Beyonce, only ranked fifth this year with a total of $54 million. Katie Perry, who was the top earner in 2015, is now down to $41 million.

The list is completed by Beyonce ($54 million), Jennifer Lopez ($39.5 million), Britney Spears ($30.5 million), Shania Twain ($27.5 million) and Celine Dion ($27 million). Collectively, the artists that belong to the top 10 list has earned north of $600 million this year.
