With both Josh and Greg out of Rebecca’s life, she finds a reason to start anew. Santino Fontana, who plays Greg in “Crazy-Ex-Girlfriend,” finally bid goodbye to the show in the airport scene of the last episode.
According to the show’s co-executive producer, Aline Brosh McKenna, they have long been contemplating on having Greg’s character out of the show to get the show in the right track. The story should revolve around Rebecca’s pursuit of happiness and not about the love triangle.
One of the two major twists this episode has that certainly shifted how the story runs is Paula’s abortion. It can be remembered that Paula was torn between choosing her law school career and her pregnancy.
Paula has always been honest that she’d want to pursue her career and that she didn’t want another child just yet - a decision that was fully supported by his husband and so her abortion was done. The scene where his son said that he’d open the door because she just had an abortion speaks a lot about her.
For one, it showed the common dilemma of choosing between a career and family. Paula just happened to be one who knows what she wants and made the choice to pursue her dreams despite the precious things she has to sacrifice. This episode loudly says that she should not be defined by her abortion.
Another noteworthy point this episode has is the importance of searching inner identity and happiness. It can be remembered that Rebecca desperately tried to get rid of everything related to Josh and Greg by burning all their stuff, which caused her whole house on fire.
Finally, she realized that she has to move on and decided on having her post-breakup makeover. Afterwards, she made it to Miss Douche’s search for the face of the brand and made it to the finals, but lost when she was asked who she is.
The episode ended with Rebecca’s realizations that she should focus in knowing herself and on finding inner peace, instead of constantly searching for happiness through her relationships with men.
