2016 was a big year for horror-thriller movies, particularly for this year's surprise box office hit "Don't Breathe." The Fede Alvarez-directed film was made with only less than a $10 million budget, but earned nearly $90 million domestically and $152.5 million worldwide. With its massive success, the creators of the movie tease that they already have great ideas for "Don't Breathe 2."

"Don't Breathe" follows a trio of robbers - Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto) - as they break into the home of a blind man, played by Stephen Lang. What was supposed to be a seemingly easy quest turned out to be a nightmare for the three, as the blind man turned out to be more capable of taking them out than they had ever imagined.

Speaking to Cinema Blend, Alvarez said "Don't Breathe 2" is definitely something they want to work on, but they do not want to make a sequel just for the heck of it. Instead, they have come up with a great idea for the sequel.

"It's only the greatest idea for a sequel that I've ever heard! I'm not kidding!" producer Sam Raimi said in agreement as quoted by the same publication.

Alvarez explained that the approach to "Don't Breathe 2" is more "anarchic as an approach to a sequel," which completely sets up the platform for something unsuspecting and different from the first film.

"Don't Breathe 2" is still pretty much in the early days, and they have not pitched the idea to Sony Pictures yet. However, Raimi already has a good idea about how the studio is going to react to it.

It is still uncertain if the original cast would return for "Don't Breathe 2," particularly Lang who's going to work on the "Avatar" sequels. However, Alvarez said that Lang was perfect as The Blind Man and added that Lang's portrayal of the role was exactly how it was described in the script,

"The role has a huge range in the movie and goes through many emotions. It's a character who leaves the audience wondering if he has redeeming qualities or not. It's a complex character and you need to sell the blindness," Alvarez told /FILM about the character.
