"Reign" Season 4 will reportedly be the show's final and last run, and is expected to culminate with the fall of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth's eventual victory over Scotland.

So far, "Reign" has stayed true to most of the historical facts on which it is primarily based. "Reign" Season 3 showed the untimely death of Mary's husband, King Francis, due to an assassination. Interestingly, Francis suffered a terrible ear infection which was initially prophesied as the cause of his death. His illness, however, was cured by magic, but he was not able to cheat death a second time when Francis and Mary were attacked in a clearing.

"We definitely take liberties with history but there is an element of history that we felt beholden to," showrunner Laurie McCarthy told EW staying true to the books. With that said, it is likely that soon enough fans will have to see Mary's defeat. This has led to speculations that "Reign" Season 4 will be the end of the line for the period drama, with Elizabeth finally taking over Scotland.

However, before the intense conflict between the royal houses ensues, "Reign" Season 4 spoilers suggest that the upcoming episodes will also focus on Mary securing a strategic marriage, which will help strengthen Mary's campaign to protect Scotland and to claim the English throne.

Meanwhile, according to TVLine, the show has cast actors to play Mary's new suitors in "Reign" Season 4. One of the characters is named Lord Danley, a nobleman who has a blood-claim to the English throne. He wants to become Mary's second husband, and form a union which "could take down Elizabeth, giving [the couple] not just one nation, but two."

Another character that will try to win Mary's heart is Bothwell, who is described as a "warm-hearted bad boy" deeply in love with Mary. The character is based on a real historical figure of the same name. The only catch though is that Bothwell, as told in history books, was accused of murdering someone very close to Queen Mary.

"Reign" Season 4 will premiere on Feb. 10, 2017 on The CW.
