Fans waiting for the highly anticipated megafight between Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez just got a boost.

It was previously reported that the target date of the GGG vs Canelo fight was September 2017 and Tim Loeffler of K2 Productions (which handles Golovkin) has confirmed that they are negotiating that date with Canelo's  handlers. Black Sports Online got this quote from Loeffler.

"I just spoke to Eric Gomez (president of Golden Boy promotions) today. We are still in continuing discussions and for that fight, if it happens, we are targeting September 2017. Commercially that is the biggest fight in the sport of boxing and both sides would win in that situation."

There was also another interesting topic that Loeffler discussed. Golovkin wants to fight Carl Froch and apparently, is willing to move up to face the retired champion.

"I wasn't teasing [when I tweeted the picture with Eddie Hearn], I was serious. I was asking him how can we break Carl Froch's record of 80K at Wembley stadium. I said the best way to do that is to put a GGG fight together and it got Froch's attention. He started talking to Eddie about the weight and what GGG could come up to so you never know. He's retired but if that fight could happen. It would be tremendous."

In the meantime, Golovkin will march into action against Danny Jacobs for the first quarter of 2017 as negotiations are on its final stages. Golovkin's camp wants him to fight four times next year.

On the other hand, Canelo's side is also reiterating their desire to get the fight done. Eric Gomez had his own statement courtesy of ESPN teasing a full calendar as well for Saul Alvarez even as the champion is recovering from injury.

"Canelo is back in training. He's keeping himself in shape, but he hasn't started using the right hand yet because he still has some more physical therapy to do," Gomez said. "He still needs a couple of more sessions and what we agreed to do is reconvene after that."

"We're looking at mid-February for him to fight, which would give him enough time to also fight again in May," Gomez continued. "Hopefully, everything goes well and then we get the Golovkin fight done for September. The plan is still to fight Golovkin."
