The upcoming "Power Rangers" movie will be keeping several elements from the original 1990s television series while introducing changes to the lore and characters. One of these changes have now surfaced, detailing the role the monster Goldar will play.

According to The Wrap, Goldar will be more akin to a monstrous weapon that served Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). It is indicated he will be the large monster that the Rangers will fight and will require them to combine their Zords into the Megazord in order to beat him.

When Rita was defeated during the prehistoric period he was evaporated into gold particles and his essence was scattered across the world. Throughout the film Rita will attempt to gather his essence again to bring him back and unleash his power on Earth and the Rangers.

It is also stated that the essence may be imbued in actual gold. For this reason Rita and her soldiers will be robbing banks to steal gold and reassemble Goldar. The Rangers are stated to have only 71 hours to stop her.

This will be a large departure from the depiction of Goldar in the television series. During the run of the show Goldar served more as a comic relief and the only few times he proved a worthy enemy was during the premiere episode and when the Green Ranger had to fight him without his Ranger powers.

In the original "Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger" series of which the American "Power Rangers" was based on, Goldar was known as Grifforzer and was a more dangerous foe for the heroes, Screen Rant reported. He also had a romantic link to the villain Lamy - who was known as Scorpina in "Power Rangers."

Lionsgate has yet to reveal an official image of Goldar and how he will be portrayed in the film. In "Zyuranger" he was referred to as a half lion and half human but in the American series he was comically referred to as a flying monkey.

"Power Rangers" releases on March 24, 2017.
